SLAVING AT A used bookshop may be a nobler vocation than trading pork bellies, but is it too much to ask that someone make eye contact through his or her Elvis Costello glasses? Is it unreasonable to expect the occasional acknowledgement of a customer's presence? Do new employees take classes to learn how to display utter contempt? Screw the Strand and its narrow aisles and indecipherable shelving practices and overpriced used books and staff of petulant clerks. They can ram all eight miles of books up their mopey asses. Next to them, the people at Barnes & Noble are downright motherly.

B. Netanyahu подробно разъясняет, что испанские города требовали от королей устранить от управления не только евреев, но и знать, а так же духовенство.
Затея, видимо, в том, чтобы доказать, что не только евреи занималиись такими (скверными?) вещами, как tax farming ... Кстати, термин вводится скромно, тихо, без объяснений. Постоянно подчеркивается (раздел "The Spanish Scene", части вторая и третья, "The Second Cycle" и "The Castilian Cities", что скверными делами по отношению к горожанам занимались не только евреи, и не любили не только их.
Вообще раздел "The Spanish Scene" начинается за здравие - евреи процветали с момента изгнания мусульман (reconquest) почти что до самой Инквизиции, а кончается - за упокой, погромы и прочее ... И оказывается, что раз не только евреями были недовольны, а и духовенством тоже, значит дело было вовсе не в религии ... а в чем-то еще :) Resource competition? "Separation and its Discontents"?
Да и tax farming выглядит кое-как, и служба при дворе короля и знати что-то напоминает ...
