An anti-Kremlin poster in a demonstration last month said, "Putin Kills Our Freedom."
Looks like the information war has entered new level recently ... what with Iran nuclear fuel deal, which seems to be crumbling anyways ... and all this acrimony over what is to be called democracy ... Russian style or not ...

And Putin's mentioning Dan Rather and other CBS people fired at the meeting with Bush ... who, obviously dismissed all this, saying Putin is listening to his "incompetent" advisors, who do not understand how democracy (American style, presumably) works. How very interesting

... the Kremlin seized the oil fields and auctioned them for about half their worth - does it mean that during "rigged privatizations of Russia's robber baron era in the 1990's" the price paid for the assets was any better i wonder?

Caption under the photograph in NYT does not say where and when this demonstration has taken place ...

Here's a good followup to the above: "A Florida judge decided recently that it's technically legal to deliberately lie or distort the news for the media on a television broadcast." Funny enough, some links in this article are broken: the articles pointed to are removed from the relevant sites.

Surely some smart ass would point out that this censorship has nothing to do with the Goverment. This argument is, essentially, the same as the one about Jews not being admitted to Moscow State University due to the government policy, whereas Princeton won't admit Jews according to the free will of its administration. If one enters this discussion in earnest, there's no way back to the small island of sanity ...

well, mtyukanov is missing the point too, i think. Both Putin & Bush play games, each - his own game, obviously. Putin pretends not to understand that Bush did not fire Dan Rather or whoever else. Bush pretends to be surprised at Putin's apparent naivete ... in fact, both use whatever means available for propaganda purposes.

As to how media is controlled by the government in Russia, nobody needs a second guess, things are pretty strightforward.

American model is not so simple, though, and works much better. Good outlook at the consequences can be found, for instance: here Obviously, Putin is not in a position to bring "Manufacturing Consent" up at his meeting with Bush - even if his KGB/FSB advisors would recommend him to do so :)
