Писал всякими железками, а то и птичьми пером, используя вместо чернил potassium permanganate (aka KMnO4, aka перманганат калия, он же - марганцево-кислый калий, в просторечьи - марганцовка, которой в России было, наверное, и в те годы полно).

Лагерь находился под Ереваном (!).

Instead, he now engaged in correspondence to obtain official permission to take his book home with him ... Indeed, he was allowed to travel alone to Moscow and to present his manuscript there for examination. ... he headed off alone toward Moscow, though admittedly in far greater comfort in a personal compartment (for the first time in 4 years). Close to Moscow, in a camp at Krasnogorsk, he had to make a copy of the manuscript... which he was told to deposit there after giving his word of honor that the content of the copy was identical to that of the original.
